Conservatories are a perfect way to add extra living space and draw natural light into your home.
As your family grows, the demand for more room grows with it and your current setup might not be quite big enough.
So what can you do?
How about your conservatory, can this be made bigger?
In this article, we answer all your questions regarding extending a conservatory and whether you need planning permission to do so.
Can you extend a conservatory?
In short, the answer is yes.
For most homeowners, extending a conservatory is not a problem and is a simple process.
However, one thing to consider is planning permission.
Do you need planning permission?
No… sort of. This is not usually required.
So, for the most part, extending can be a relatively easy process as you don’t need to adhere to planning requirements.
However, the UK Government has set out some rules you must follow to avoid planning permission.
Rules and regulations
The regulations are pretty straightforward and are easy to comply with.
This makes an extension a possibility for most homeowners.
Despite this, the rules regarding the placement, the overall size and how high a conservatory makes it more difficult to extend if it is already large.
These include:
- A one storey extension can be no taller than four metres.
- For attached properties, conservatories cannot be built more than three metres away from the back wall of the property.
- For detached properties, this maximum distance is four metres.
- Additional buildings can only make up to 50% of the overall property.
Before extending
Planning permission is not the only thing you need to consider when extending your conservatory.
You will also need to consider:
- Whether your foundations can support an extension.
- How much you would like to extend by.
- Matching the new frames to the existing ones.
Now you know what extending your conservatory entails, you may still want to go ahead with your project.
Before you do, it’s just as important that you choose a trusted installer.
